What's in my art journal? Why it's a Sea Nymph

Today's share is a page I've shown before.  It was nice "as is", but I decided I needed to add something to it.

I rarely use colored pencils (not to be confused with Inktense pencils you see me use, which are "ink" pencils) but when Hermine told me that she uses colored pencils on her cards (which by the way are small works of art, check out her blog here), Her colors seem to sit right on top of the background without the background showing through. I had to try it for myself.   I'm using an inexpensive set of color (color, colour, tomato, tomahto) pencils.  They are woodless, meaning, color all around!

Using my handcarved sea nymph stamp, I outlined the stamp with Tim Hotlz Distress Ink, Antique Linen. This ink is very light and is just slightly visible on the page, leaving no harsh outlines.

(you can barely see it)

Hermine, says she works in layers, son that's what I did. Continuing to build up layers until I was satisfied.  I didn't ask her what brand of pencils she uses, but I imagine she uses a better quality set then the one I have that gives her better coverage.

I defined some of the circles next to her with the pencils too.

So there you have it.  These pencils are a little waxy but there's not a high sheen to them which is nice.  I'll have to see how they work with my spray inks and stains as far as a resist, I'll let you know.

Thanks for today's visit and if you get a chance, please check out Hermine's Place. Click here , you will not regret it.   Until the next blog...enjoy!

  1. Awesome art journal page. I do use high quality pencils because they have a rich pigment and yes they are more expensive but they last a life time :o) love your hand carved sea nymph, great job.

  2. I often use painting and stamping or even stenciling together, but never think of using pencils. Your nymph is a wonderful addition to your journal page, Carol. She is gorgeous! Off to check out Hermine's works!
